The Bistro

The Bistro, Kampala
Located in the center of hectic Kisimenti Shopping Center is a little oasis called The Bistro. With a vine-wrapped garden patio outside and leather couches inside, this darling café offers a variety of comfortable seating! It’s the perfect spot for a lunch date, happy hour with the co-workers, or a romantic night out.

During lunch hour, you’ll find this place busy every day of the week, despite the inevitable nightmare of finding a parking spot in this shopping center. In fact, it often feels like you’re living in a video game as you dodge pedestrians, street vendors, beggars, and of course, other cars, to nab a spot and head inside. If taking a boda boda motorcycle is an option, I highly recommend it when heading to this spot! In fact, the parking situation is one of the only negative aspects of dining here, though it doesn’t seem to stop anyone!

The Bistro

The Bistro offers a delicious menu with a wide variety of items. They serve everything from a light salad to a fillet steak and everything in between. If it’s breakfast you’re in the mood for – they serve it all day. If you follow a vegetarian diet, you’ll have several items to choose from. If you’re in a hurry like so many of us in Kampala (note the sarcasm), they even have an entire portion of the menu dedicated to “Sandwiches and Quick Lunches.”  Under this section of the menu, you’ll also find quiches, quesadillas, tuna rolls, and wraps. I highly recommend the pesto chicken sandwich and the steak wrap with Moroccan spices.

In addition to the lunch items mentioned above, they serve salads, pasta, burgers, Indian curries, and a variety of grill items. Pair your meal with one of their fresh juices or smoothies, and you’ll thank me later!

One of the unique things about The Bistro is their “World Tapas” menu. Available for lunch and dinner, these smaller bites allow you and your party to enjoy several different small dishes as part of a shared meal. Items on this section of the menu range from 7,000–19,000 UGX for tapas like assorted bruschetta, sesame chicken wings, cocktail samosas, and spicy meatballs. Did I mention that their garlic chips are to die for?! Keep in mind, however, that these are very small portions and are not intended to be anyone’s full meal!

The Bistro, Kampala

The Bistro also offers a fun happy hour, Monday to Thursday from 4:00–7:00 p.m. They’ve titled their happy hour “Gin o’Clock” due to their specials on gin and tonics and other gin cocktails ranging from 4,000–10,000 UGX.  Also during “Gin o’Clock,” they offer a selection of tapas for only 8,000 UGX. With great ambiance and prompt service, it’s the perfect place to wind down after a long workday.

If you beat me there, go ahead and order me a G & T!

About Lauren McBride

Hey, I’m Lauren. I’m what you’d call an “expat by marriage.” When my husband and I stepped off the plane in Entebbe in June 2012, I had no idea what I was in for: the breezy traffic on the open road, enjoyable boda rides through the heart of town, or the gentle, lingering smell of exhaust blowing in my face. I continue to be amazed by the strong community in Kampala, the arts, the delicious food, and the fun hangs around this town. I’m committed to sharing the very best of Kampala with you through this website. Contact me anytime with your ideas, feedback, or jokes at lauren@livinginkampala.com.
