Mish Mash, a cafe and art gallery by day, a chill lounge by night, offers some of the most unique ambiance in Kampala. Just north of downtown, it’s the perfect place to step out of the smoggy Kampala hustle and bustle into a quiet garden haven that highlights Uganda’s lush tropical atmosphere. “We’ve got this really cool space, so we want to be more than just a cafe, we want innovative things to happen here”, says director Genevieve Williams.
There’s a wide variety of seating to choose from… chase lounges scatter the lawn, a maze of galleries and sofas inside, small tables on the patio and bar/lounge seating, which is best utilized at night. The most distinguished, if not exactly the most comfortable, lounge spot at Mish Mash is the small tree house on the beautiful front lawn. Mish Mash features new local artists each month, always plays good music, and houses a small gift shop full of locally made, pricey, social business products.
There is a wide range of activities at Mish Mash, including an oversized chessboard nestled amongst the trees and a small jungle gym for kids. Each weekday offers a scheduled menu special or entertainment event. On Wednesdays they play classic films on a large projector screen in the back lawn, so bring a blanket for a cozy picnic. Follow Mish Mash on Facebook to stay updated on special events like weekend happiness workshops, drumming circles, and Buganda dance classes!
The menu offers mid-line Kampala prices with dishes varying from 12,000-18,000 UGX, including all-day breakfast, salads, baguette sandwiches, soups, fish & chips, chicken entrees, tapas, desserts and a kids menu. The food is consistently good but still nothing to write home about yet.
The extensive cocktail list is pricey, falling between 12,000-25,000 UGX, but the drinks are well worth it. The Pimm’s No.1 cocktail (Pimm’s cucumber, mint leaves, oranges, soda and apples) is one of my favorites. They also offer a wide variety of coffee blends, which the talented baristas can whip up in your desired form. Tea, milkshakes, smoothies, juices and sodas are also available.
The service is exceptional and the staff is very professional. From 11:00 am until 7:00 pm Mish Mash offers free, unlimited WiFi access to customers! Whether you’re looking for a place to get some work done during the day or a relaxing evening with friends, Mish Mash comes highly recommended. Stay tuned for changes because Mish Mash is managed exceptionally well and is constantly evolving. More vegetarian entrees, capoeira classes, photography workshops, freestyle drawing classes, poetry nights and new live music are all in the plans for the upcoming months!
