Endiro Coffee

Endiro Coffee, Kampala

What do you get when you take a corner property formerly used as a garbage dump and transform it into a coffee drinkers paradise? Endiro! It still baffles my mind as to how owner Gloria Katusiime was able to envision and create such an aesthetically pleasing environment out of this seemingly unusable plot of land. She must have had some serious training in feng shui!

Enveloped by a cover of verdant foliage, be sure you keep your eyes peeled for the entrance as it’s easy to overlook. Once finding your way to the terrace, you may be shocked to discover a serene atmosphere resembling a mixture between a botanical garden and safari lodge. The carpentry is remarkably good for Uganda, with the majority of materials used in construction being locally sourced hardwoods that bring out the coffee shop aesthetic.

Endiro, Kampala

Endiro features a surprisingly wide selection of coffee’s ranging in price from 5,000 to 8,000 UGX. The cappuccinos are my favorite with mixed juices, especially the sunrise, coming in at a close second. If ordering a house coffee, they are usually brewed pretty weak, so I like to ask for mine to be strong. Their food is great as well, with dishes varying from sandwiches and wraps to breakfasts, stir fry and burgers. If you order a sandwich meal, you get the choice of chips, salad or fresh fruit. These meals will range in price from the least expensive of 9,200 UGX up to 20,000 UGX… but hurry there quick because word on street is that with the rising popularity of Endiro the prices will also be rising in the coming weeks!

Don’t tell Gloria, but I know of a few people that have turned Endiro into a bit of a personal office space. Who can blame them though with the free wireless internet, many available electrical outlets, and quiet nooks to work from. I am definitely guilty of utilizing Endiro to its full capacity by scheduling several back-to-back meetings followed by an early light dinner and ending with several hours of computer work until closing time. The only bad part about this is that as word spreads about how good Endiro is to work from competition for available space can be tight in this very compact space. And if you end up on the second floor and you are as tall as me, you might feel a bit like a giant in hobbit land as you have to duck down to fit.

The service is another positive aspect. Food and drinks are usually served in a timely manner, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Being very open to criticism, Gloria and staff listen to customers thoughts and advice on everything from drink and food preparation to aesthetics to you name it. And the best thing is that they take action to improve things.

Overall, Endiro is a pleasant and conveniently located place to stop for a cup of coffee, have a meeting, or take a break from the office/bring your personal office there. A very welcome addition to the Kampala coffee scene.
